There's a strong argument to be made that, as a craft, pipes reached their zenith of quality from the 1930s - 1950s. True, there are thousands of great looking well made pipes made after that period, but during this golden age, even pedestrian pipes possessed a certain quality unsurpassed in their contemporary cousins. Case in point: this William Demuth and Company Milano, Ripple Briar, Hesson estate pipe. From across the room this looks like a patent era Dunhill. The blast is craggy, yet softened by decades of use, and yet the stem and bowl have cleaned up to look as if this was made in the past 5 years. While it's impossible to date the manufacture of this pipe exactly, we'd guess this one is from the 1930s. One note, vulcanite injection molding at the time of this pipes production is not what it is now, and this stem, while in fantastic condition, does have some foreign material that was caught in the mold. It is very minor, and only adds to the charm of this very vintage piece.
