Jesse Jones 2026 Halloween Pipe Sandblast Perched Night Gaunt with Plateau

Every year, the annual Halloween pipe gives me a chance to play with unorthodox concepts and design features. For the 2026 Halloween pipe, I had two ideas in mind. The form of the pipe was loosely inspired by the Night Gaunts from the Lovecraft mythos. Described as great, jet black, bat-like entities with curved horns, pointed tails and no face, this pipe attempts to capture the overall feel of the creatures without being overtly sculptural.

The second idea was to incorporate parts of the block that would normally be discarded as waste. Often, pipe makers cut the plateau off the outside of the block and discard it. In this case, I used this cut-off to create the stylized pedestal for the bowl. This gives the sitting pipe the appearance of a roosting eldritch horror, ready to spring into flight at the slightest moment. This does make the pipe a bit unwieldy to smoke, so the design is modular. It can be smoked with the pedestal attached, or you can remove it for something a bit more manageable.

Achieving the perfect balance and design cohesiveness was a challenge, but I think the finished product is unlike anything I’ve seen in the pipe world. -Jesse
