Jürgen Moritz

Jürgen Moritz, a German pipe maker from Mönchengladbach, has had a long love affair with pipes. At age of 13, he was already hiding pipes from his mother, and as a young man, he learned much of the essentials of pipe smoking working part time in a large German tobacco shop. Jürgen worked for many years as a social worker, but continually dabbled with pipes, and after more than two decades of pipe making experience Jürgen is crafting some of the most well-proportioned neo-Danish pipes in the industry.

We would classify Jürgen’s overall aesthetic as highly influenced by the Danish school of design. This is no coincidence, since Jürgen has spent time studying with Tom Eltang, Cornelius Mänz, and has been friends with many other influential European carvers including Frank Axmacher. You’ll find Jürgen’s work to be tasteful and conservative, with frequent use of classic accent materials like horn and boxwood. Proportionally, his compositions tend to be lean, but this does not necessarily relate to small pipes, but pipes that look good at any size, stripped of unnecessary bulk. Each pipe is made by hand with the highest quality briar and stem material.
