Back then his workshop consisted of a bench grinder and a drill press. Charl pirated stems off of locally sourced basket pipes. He describes his early work as huge bowls with thin stems!  \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eA voracious reader of fiction, Charl has been studying pipe related forums for any relevant information for a pipe maker.  His work is clearly influenced by the Danish school, with an emphasis for the more flowing proportions.  He credits Tom Eltang, and especially Poul Rasmussen, for much of his inspiration. The slim, elegant, and flowing shapes that improved the old, run-of-the-mill factory pipes are some of his favorite to recreate.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe work we see from him today is outstanding by any measure.  Pipe \"internals\" are his top priority and his craft continues to improve towards a fluid, elegant, and organic feel.  Favoring briar for most bowls, Charl has experience working with amber, acrylic, \u003cem\u003eprotea nitidia \u003c\/em\u003e(also known as \"waboom\" in Afrikaans), horn, and bamboo.  He prefers smoking Billiards, Canadians, and Pots.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCharl Goussard can be described as absurdly gracious and grounded, which makes him a delight to talk with, should you get the chance to meet him.  He is a Virginia\/Perique fan who, like so many other talented artists, in the cheeks and precise in the taper, this smoker is all about the grain.  There are a few blemishes which keep the price from being twice as high, but they don't distract from the tremendous girth of flame and straight grain that need no description.  The rounded rim and the wide slot keep this sitter looking great no matter how often it is pulled off the rack.  The roundness and proportion bring to mind ripeness and ready tobaccos looking for the perfect to attached to the beauty in the wood, flaw and all, to let that happen, and we couldn't agree more.  Note the little flare on the adornment of the tear drop shank's cap.  Even the shank has a bit of
