Jason Patrick

American carver Jason Patrick’s love of pipes began at a young age. Jason’s grandfather was a prodigious pipe smoker, and it didn’t take long for young Jason to become enamored by the gentle art practiced by his elder. Jason began smoking a pipe himself during his early twenties, but it wasn’t until 20 years later that he began making his own.

Initially heavily influenced by the English classics, Jason cut his teeth learning the canonical shapes. Later, he began to lean heavily toward the Danish tradition including freehand shaping and drilling. A photographer by trade, Jason already had a keen eye and spatial awareness that lent itself naturally to pipe design. He fell in love with the beauty and character of the burl.

From his workshop in the suburbs of Chicago,  Jason produces around 10 pipes a month using both traditional and Danish methods. He attempts to get the most out of each block, emphasizing grain and shape in a harmonious composition. Jason doesn’t shy away from bolder accents like fordite, mammoth tooth, and whale spine, and also incorporates interesting color choices for his stems, but mostly sticks to ebonite. As one of a bevy of very talented American carvers in recent years, we are excited to present his work to you.
